The Cheapest Ways to Fly to Iceland

Introduction:

Still looking for the cheapest way to get to Iceland? In this guide we’ll show you several of the best purchase options so you can spend less time looking at flights and more time dreaming about Iceland’s stunning beauty.

Iceland Overview

  • Keflavik International Airport (KEF)

  • Airline Options: Delta, American Airlines, United Airlines, Icelandair, British Airways

  • Popular Non-stop routes from U.S. cities: Boston, NYC, Washington DC, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, San Francisco, Orlando

Cheapest business-class redemption

Winner: Iceland is not a destination with any obvious killer business class offer. British Airway/American Airlines, is the cheapest option you’ll find if you’re set on flying business class. You can find routes to London with a stopover in Iceland for ~47K miles one way.

  • Transfer Chase, AMEX, Bilt, or Capital One points to Avios to book via British Airways. If no BA availability, and not enough AA miles, considering booking through another oneworld partner like Cathay Pacific - who offers a set distance based redemption

Cheapest economy redemptions to Iceland:

Winner: Flying Blue miles - via either KLM or Air France! While Delta is probably the most common airline when we think of Skyteam partners, their redemptions to Iceland are extremely expensive, ranging from 60K—80K in economy! However, you can book the SAME flights via Air France/KLM’s Flying Blue portal for as little as 17.5K miles… That is less than 1/4th the cost of going direct with Delta!!

Overall Winner: Booking with cash via Icelandair

Since most airline mile redemptions to Iceland are around 1:1 dollar to point ratio we actually recommend a cash seat with Icelandair if you’re looking to purely maximize the value of your points/miles. Icelandair flys nonstop from a number of locations in the US, and offers round trip flights for under $400 from the East Coast. If you have a chest of Chase points, and have the Sapphire Reserve or Preferred card, booking through your Sapphire portal to get the 1.5X/1.25X point multiplier is another excellent option.

Additional Tips:

  • Utilize free stopovers for extended itineraries - Iceland is a very common stopover destination between the US and London

  • Leverage roundtrip flights with Icelandair to maximize value

  • Check partner airlines for different redemptions: You can book Delta flights to Iceland on Virgin and Air France/KLM for more than half the price
